What Is a Built-In Gas Grill?

A built-in gas grill is a grill head without a cart that drops into a cutout in an outdoor kitchen island and connects to a propane (LP) or natural gas (NG) supply. The island carries the grill, so it becomes a permanent cooking station rather than a standalone appliance.

This collection brings together built-in grill heads from Artisan and Videl, from 26" to 42" wide, plus a built-in griddle and tabletop drop-in burners. Prefer a grill that stands on its own? See our freestanding and cart grills.

Artisan Built-In Grills: Three Series, 26" to 42"

Artisan grills are made in the USA by Superior Equipment Solutions (SES Brands) in City of Industry, California, from commercial-grade 304 stainless steel. Every model uses 304 stainless steel U-burners and is offered for LP or NG.

  • American Eagle (AAEP) – 26", 32" and 36". 9V battery electronic ignition and no lights, so the grill needs no wiring: AAEP-26, AAEP-32, AAEP-36.
  • Artisan Series (ART) – 32", 36" and 42" with 115V electronic ignition and halogen work lights: ART-32, ART-36, ART-42.
  • Artisan Professional (ARTP) – 32", 36" and 42", the top of the range, with an infrared rear rotisserie burner, an included rotisserie kit and blue LED control-panel lighting: ARTP-32, ARTP-36, ARTP-42.

  • Gran Fuego 42 – five burners with a 114,000 BTU output for larger crowds.
  • 36" Commercial Premium Grill – three burners, 653 sq in of primary cooking space plus 207 sq in on the warming rack.
  • Gran Plancha – a built-in griddle with 495 sq in of cooking area and a dual-burner design, from pancakes to seared steaks.
  • The Anza – tabletop grills with cooking grates and flavor bars, built into an outdoor table: single burner or double burner.

How to Choose a Built-In Grill

  • Width and cutout. Artisan cutouts are 19-3/4" deep and 24-1/2" wide for the 26", 30-1/2" for the 32", 34-1/2" for the 36" and 40-1/2" for the 42". Confirm the cutout on the product page before the island is built.
  • Cooking area. Artisan totals, including the warming rack, are 570 sq in (26"), 719 sq in (32"), 818 sq in (36") and 966 sq in (42").
  • Fuel. Artisan grills come in LP or NG versions. Choose the one that matches your gas supply when you order.
  • Power. American Eagle grills run on a 9V battery. Artisan Series and Professional grills need a 115V outlet under the counter for ignition and lights.
  • Island material. In an enclosure built from combustible materials, Artisan requires its matching insulated jacket, and professional installation is required.

Plan the Rest of Your Outdoor Kitchen

The grill is usually the anchor of the island. Around it, add side burners and power burners, an outdoor refrigerator or ice bin and access doors, drawers and trash centers.

Want a ready-made island? Artisan 32" grills such as the AAEP-32 fit the Haven 72" kitchen base, and 36" grills such as the ARTP-36 fit the Haven 96" base. See Haven outdoor kitchens or browse BBQ islands.

Built-In Grill FAQs

What is the difference between a built-in grill and a cart grill?

A built-in grill is a grill head that drops into a cutout in an outdoor kitchen island. A cart grill is a grill head mounted on a freestanding cart. Artisan sells each grill both ways, for example the ARTP-36 built-in and the ARTP-36C cart.

What cutout does a 36" Artisan built-in grill need?

All Artisan 36" grills (AAEP-36, ART-36 and ARTP-36) need a 34-1/2" W x 19-3/4" D x 9-1/2" H cutout. If the island is built from combustible materials, the grill must sit in the matching ART-IJ36 insulated jacket, which needs a larger 37-1/4" W x 23-5/8" D cutout.

Do built-in gas grills need electricity?

It depends on the series. Artisan American Eagle grills use a 9V battery ignition and need no outlet. Artisan Series and Professional grills use 115V electronic ignition and lights, so plan a 115V outlet under the counter.

Which built-in grills include a rotisserie?

Artisan Professional grills (ARTP-32, ARTP-36, ARTP-42) include a rotisserie kit and an infrared rear rotisserie burner. On the ARTP-42 the motor turns up to 25 lb. American Eagle and Artisan Series grills accept an optional Artisan rotisserie kit.

What warranty comes with these grills?

Every grill is covered by its manufacturer's warranty. Artisan covers stainless steel burners for 15 years, all stainless steel parts for 10 years and ceramic briquette trays for 3 years. For Videl coverage details, contact our team before ordering.
