The Outdoor Plus Cabo Square corten steel gas fire pit with white-cushioned teak lounge seating on a gravel patio

Rectangular vs Square Fire Pits: Which Shape Fits Your Patio? (2026)

Quick answer

Choose a square fire pit when four chairs sit around the fire, one per side, in a conversation set. Choose a rectangular or linear fire pit when you face a sofa, sectional or long lounge. A 36 to 48-inch square fits most chair groups; a 48 to 72-inch rectangle fits most sofas. As of October 2026, square models start from $2,685 and rectangular models from $3,174.

In this guide

Square and rectangular fire pits line up with pavers, walls and modern outdoor furniture in a way a round bowl does not. The real question is which shape fits your seating. Here is how to decide, with the real sizes, heat ratings and prices of the The Outdoor Plus models we sell.

Want both shapes in one design family?

The Cabo comes as a square (36, 48 and 60 inches) and as a linear rectangle (56, 66 and 90 inches), in metal, powder coat or GFRC concrete.

Square vs rectangular vs linear: the difference

A square fire pit has four equal sides, so the flame sits in the center and every side gets the same view and the same distance to the fire. In The Outdoor Plus range, square fire pits come in 36, 48 and 60-inch sizes.

A rectangular fire pit is longer than it is deep. Most rectangular gas fire pits use a long, narrow fire pan and a linear burner, so the flame forms a line instead of a cluster. When a rectangle gets long and slim, it is usually called a linear fire pit. The Coronado and Del Mar, for example, are 28 inches deep in every length from 48 up to 96 or 120 inches.

The Cabo Linear sits in between: at 38 inches deep it has a wide ledge around the flame for drinks and plates.

How to choose the shape by seating layout

The simplest rule: let the furniture decide. Draw your seating plan first, then pick the fire pit shape that repeats it.

Four lounge chairs or a conversation set: choose square

Four chairs facing each other form a square, so a square fire pit fits naturally in the middle. Nobody ends up at the "short end" of the flame. The Outdoor Plus describes the 36-inch Cabo Square this way: four chairs, one on each side, and you have an outdoor room.

Sofa, sectional or daybed: choose rectangular

A sofa is long and straight, so a long flame in front of it gives every seat a view of the fire. For a three-seat sofa with a chair or two on the ends, a 48 to 72-inch rectangle is the usual fit.

Long lounge or seating on both sides: choose linear

If you have a long sectional, or seating on two facing sides, a linear fire pit of 84 inches or more lets everyone share the flame. The Outdoor Plus describes the 96-inch Coronado with a full-length sofa on one side and lounge chairs on the other, and the 96-inch Del Mar with a deep sectional on one side and lounge chairs on the other.

Drinks and plates by the fire: consider a fire table

Most fire pits on this page are 15 or 16 inches tall, which is lounge height. If you want a taller surface, look at the 24-inch-tall Square Ramona and Linear Ramona fire tables or the Rectangle Outback. Our fire table buying guide explains table heights in detail, and fire bowl vs fire pit vs fire table compares the three formats.

Sizes, heat and seating space compared

Same length does not mean same footprint. A 48-inch square covers 16 square feet. A 48 by 28-inch rectangle covers about 9.3 square feet, a little more than half, which is why rectangles fit narrow patios and spaces between a sofa and a view.

Model Overall size (L x W x H) Heat output

Del Mar 96" 96" x 28" x 15" H Up to 65,000 BTU

Dimensions and BTU ratings as listed on each product page, October 2026.

Heat follows the burner, not the shape: the 48-inch Cabo Square and 48-inch Del Mar are both rated up to 65,000 BTU, while the 48-inch Coronado is rated up to 40,000 BTU. The longest Coronado carries an 84-inch burner rated up to 140,000 BTU.

Seating space and clearances

Plan the walking room first: place the seating where you will really sit, then check that people can walk behind it. Our fire table guide suggests about 2 to 3 feet of walking space around the table once chairs are in place. Our small backyard guide adds a useful proportion rule: keep the fire pit to about one-third of the seating area.

For distances to walls, overhangs, railings and furniture, follow the clearances in the manufacturer's installation manual and your local code. Do not guess these. Keep it on a stable, non-combustible surface and out of enclosed spaces. For a quick overview of fire pit sizing, see our fire pit size guide.

Materials, ignition and gas type

Materials. Corten steel weathers to a rust patina, hammered copper ages naturally, and stainless steel stays cleaner-looking. Powder coat adds color on steel. GFRC (glass-fiber-reinforced concrete) looks like solid concrete with less weight; use only a breathable cover on it.

Ignition. Depending on the model, you can choose Match Lit, Match Lit w/ Flame Sense, Flame Sense w/ Spark Ignition, Low Voltage Electronic Ignition, Plug & Play, and on newer sizes Spark Glow (key valve with spark igniter). The 48 to 84-inch Coronado in metal or powder coat offers Match Lit w/ Flame Sense, Low Voltage and Plug & Play.

Gas type. Every model here is available for natural gas or liquid propane. Natural gas fixes the location to the gas line; propane lets you place the fire pit more freely, but you need a spot for the tank and hose. Gas connections should be made by a licensed gas fitter or plumber, and local codes apply.

FAQ

Is a square or rectangular fire pit better?

Neither is better in general. A square fire pit suits a conversation set of four chairs because every seat is the same distance from the flame. A rectangular or linear fire pit suits a sofa, sectional or long lounge because the flame runs along the seating line. Match the shape to the furniture you already have.

What size square fire pit do I need for four chairs?

A 36-inch square is the compact choice: The Outdoor Plus describes the 36-inch Cabo Square as fitting four chairs, one on each side. Choose 48 inches for larger lounge chairs or a roomier patio, and 60 inches for a big outdoor room with deep seating.

How long should a rectangular fire pit be for a sectional?

As a general rule, choose a fire pit that is shorter than the sofa or the long side of the sectional it faces, so the flame stays centered on the seating. A 48 to 72-inch Coronado or Del Mar works with most sofas. The 84 to 120-inch sizes are made for long sectionals or seating on both sides.

Do square fire pits give off more heat than rectangular ones?

Heat depends on the burner, not the shape. For example, the 48-inch Cabo Square is rated up to 65,000 BTU, while the 48-inch Coronado is rated up to 40,000 BTU. Longer rectangular models carry longer burners: the 120-inch Coronado is rated up to 140,000 BTU. Check the BTU rating on each product page.

How much does a rectangular or square gas fire pit cost?

As of October 2026, The Outdoor Plus square fire pits start from $2,685 (36-inch Cabo Square, Metal Collection). Rectangular models start from $3,174 (48-inch Coronado, GFRC wood grain) and $3,187 (48-inch Del Mar, GFRC concrete). Price depends on size, material and ignition.

Can these fire pits run on propane and natural gas?

Yes. Every The Outdoor Plus model we sell is available for natural gas or liquid propane, and you choose the gas type when you order. Gas connections should be made by a licensed gas fitter or plumber, and local codes apply.
